Brazil Floods Death Toll Rises to 83, Dozens Remain Missing

Brazil Floods

The death toll from the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, has risen to at least 83, according to the state’s Civil Defense unit. Authorities are also investigating four additional deaths to determine if they were related to the storms.

Here are some details according to the report of CNN International.

Injuries and Displacements

Civil Defense reports that the disaster has injured at least 276 people, left 111 unaccounted for, and displaced 121,000 others. The floods have caused widespread damage, affecting more than 850,000 people across 345 municipalities, destroying homes, roads, and bridges.

Local residents and evacuees who spoke to CNN reported seeing dead bodies still in floodwaters, indicating the death toll could rise. Colonel José Carlos Sallet, subcommander of Rio Grande do Sul Military Firefighters, said on Sunday that approximately 1,000 firefighters are engaged in rescue missions. “When the rain stops, they have been doing short operations to save as many people as possible. Yesterday (Saturday), we were able to intensify operations,” Sallet said.

Images from the affected areas show muddy brown waters rising to the rooftops in some places, with rescue teams using inflatable rafts to evacuate people and their pets.

Previous Flood Events and Climate Change

Rio Grande do Sul has faced a growing number of extreme weather events in recent years. At least 54 people died in the state in September following a subtropical cyclone. The climate crisis, primarily driven by human activities like burning fossil fuels, is intensifying extreme weather events worldwide, making them more severe and frequent.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and conduct rescue and recovery operations, while the affected communities face the daunting task of rebuilding in the wake of the floods.
