Myanmar Records Hottest Ever April Temperature of 48.2C

Hottest Temperature

Myanmar recorded its hottest ever April temperature of 48.2 degrees Celsius (118.76 Fahrenheit), signaling a severe heatwave in the Southeast Asian nation, authorities announced Monday.

A record-setting temperature was reported in Chauk, in central Myanmar’s Magway region, on Sunday, according to the weather office. This temperature is the highest ever seen in April since records began 56 years ago.

Here are some details of the incident according to the report of The Philippine Star.

Unprecedented Heat Across the Country

On the same day, temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in Yangon, the commercial hub, and 44 degrees Celsius in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. This information was reported by the weather office.

The heatwave has caused disruption across Myanmar, particularly in Chauk, a town in the country’s arid central plains.

“It was too hot here, and all of us just stayed at home,” said one Chauk resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We can do nothing when it’s like this.”

Daytime temperatures across much of Myanmar’s central region on Thursday were 3-4 degrees Celsius above the April average. This data comes from the country’s weather monitoring authority.

Impact of Climate Change on Heatwaves

Global temperatures reached record highs last year. The United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization has noted that Asia is warming at an especially fast rate. Climate change has been scientifically shown to cause heatwaves to become longer, more frequent, and more intense.

The impact of heatwaves in the region has become more severe, with heat-related illnesses and other climate-related issues on the rise. This record-breaking temperature in Myanmar underscores the effects of climate change on weather patterns. It also highlights the urgent need for action to combat climate change.
