According to CNN International, Volkov was assaulted by an unknown assailant who broke a car window, sprayed tear gas in his eyes, and attacked him with a hammer. Images shared after the incident showed Volkov with injuries to his face and legs, indicating a violent assault.

Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, and the director of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, Ivan Zhdanov, confirmed the attack. They provided details of the incident. Subsequently, they took Volkov to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Investigation by Lithuanian Authorities

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis announced that authorities are investigating the attack. He described it as shocking and emphasized that authorities will hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

The assault on Volkov comes amid Russia’s presidential election, which many view as a predetermined process favoring President Vladimir Putin. Volkov had criticized the elections as a propaganda tool to maintain Putin’s grip on power.

Volkov, like many other Russian activists, has been living outside Russia due to safety concerns and faces politically motivated charges in his home country. The attack underscores the risks faced by opposition figures under Russia’s increasingly repressive regime.

Legacy of Alexey Navalny

The attack on Volkov follows the recent death of Alexey Navalny in a Russian prison, sparking condemnation and allegations of foul play. Navalny’s team and other activists have faced persecution and exile as the Kremlin cracks down on dissent.

The assault on Leonid Volkov highlights the ongoing threats faced by Russian opposition figures both at home and abroad. As investigations continue, there are calls for justice and international attention to ensure the safety of activists fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia.
